sms triggered campaigns

SMS triggered advertisements are displayed or downloaded on receipt of an SMS message from a specific sender

SMS messaging is being increasingly used by companies who wish to maintain a closer personal relationship with their customers. Using PACE rules, a campaign can subscribe to SMS delivery events. When a SMS from a sender identified by either an MSISDN or name is received the campaign is triggered.

SMS triggered advertisements work in one of two ways:

  1. Campaigns subscribe to SMS messages from specific MSISDNs or 'named senders' and receive notification when new messages from these parties are delivered to the handset.
  2. A meta-campaign can subscribe to all messages matching a regular-expression, for example, one that matches a shortcode . Meta-campaigns are used in campaign discovery to facilitate the download of related campaigns to the device based on SMS senders (where these are not already present).

The screenshots show an example from our voicemail solution where the shortcode '321' is matched and the SMS message contents are parsed and used in a dynamic campaign view.

use cases

SMS triggered advertisements can be used wherever a customer receives an opt-in SMS notification.

In the simplest application, the receipt of an SMS from an opt-in partner can trigger the download of a related advertising campaign. However, many more scenarios exist for SMS triggered advertisements including:

Banking
Two-factor SMS authentication; prompt to download mobile banking applications; on low-balance and pay-deposit alerts and more.
Mass Transit
Timetable query and late running service updates and more.
Airlines
Flight booking confirmations; late-flight notification; frequent flyer awards and more.
Coupons
Daily deal notification and interactions.

Clearly, the scope for SMS triggered advertisements is limited only by the use of SMS itself.

creating sms campaigns

The key to in-call and after-call services is the fact that PACE supports multiple independent campaigns whose display and update is under the control of the client rules engine.

For operators who deploy this type of service, Phidget provides a simple interface through which campaigns can be configured. This system uses pre-built server templates and UI templates to dynamically generate the campaign including:

MSISDN / Sender Targeting
Country and telephone number/sender targeting for the campaign.
UI Elements
UI assets including, potentially, message parsing options.
Click Through
Options list and associated actions to be displayed on click-through including triggers for geolocating the user.
After SMS Campaign
A standard campaign to be displayed in the normal client display carousel.
Campaign Metadata
Including information on how long the campaign should reside on the handset.

Both the PACE client for Series 60 and Android support this feature.

benefits

PACE SMS triggered advertisements provide a powerful tool that designers can use to create closely-targeted, opt-in, high-impact, high-value display advertisements and information services on the handset that are driven by the receipt of SMS messages.
